Our Story

FNES 2016 Local Spelling Bee

FNES held their annual Spelling Bee on Tuesday, December 20th, 2016. Students from 1st through 5th Grades were eligible to compete in a classroom spelling bee in order to qualify for the local school-wide competition.

Our overall Spelling Bee winner was 5th Grader, Zoe Alvarez, who will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee at San Antoino College on February 18th, 2017. Winners at the regional competition will qualify to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C. Congratulations, Zoe!

Sedimentary Cookies

Students in Mr. Soriano's 5th Grade science class were using different kinds of cookies to show how sedimentary rock is created in layers over millions of years. They also explained how coal, oil, and natural gas is created within the sedimentary rock. After the lab was over, students were allowed to eat their cookies!

Profitable Math-tastic Bake Sale

Students in Mrs. Rethaber's 2nd Grade class helped Mrs. Chilek's 4th Graders make a math lesson come to life by having a bake sale. The 4th Graders are learning about profit, so the best way to do this was to bring this lesson to life. Students worked hard to figure out exactly what expenses they would have for a real bake sale and then set their prices. Bring on the 2nd Grade customers! The 2nd Graders used prior knowledge about money to buy items at the sale and had to figure out if they could afford any other items. At the end of the sale, 4th Graders had to calculate their receipts, find the difference from their expenses and see if they had any profit. Students experienced real world applications of no profit and great profit!

Text Structures & Main Ideas

Students in Mrs. Bauer's 4th Grade reading class are using iStation to review and reinforce text structures and main idea lessons. Each student is able to work at their own pace to complete their individualized reviews.
